What to know before you buy
- The products here post entries to your books with nobody keying them in. Services staffed by bookkeepers are left out, and some vendors sell both, so check which tier you are buying.
- Every vendor publishes a best case, such as up to 98 percent categorized automatically. Expect to fix some of it yourself, and ask who reviews the exceptions.
- Searching for an AI bookkeeper mostly turns up accounting firms using AI, at firm prices. Software that does the work itself is cheaper, from $29 a month here.
- In reviews, the recurring problems are missing transactions and bank feeds that stop categorizing. Check your books the first few months.
More from our research
How real (from our first round of research)
Services staffed by people are common in this job and are left out, and the split is visible on the vendors’ own pricing pages rather than hidden. Two vendors sell a software-only tier beside a tier with a named human bookkeeper, and the software tier is what is counted: one publishes that at $99 the AI categorizes transactions, reconciles accounts and closes books monthly, while the tier above adds a US-based bookkeeper who handles, explains and reviews the books. Two other well-known names were kept out entirely because every plan bundles a dedicated finance team or a named accountant. Of the 13 we checked in the first round, 11 post entries to the books without a person entering them, and two publish that a human reviews the exceptions afterwards, which is a real limit.
Watch for
Every vendor publishes a best case rather than a guarantee, so expect to correct some of it yourself: up to 98 percent auto-categorization on one page, a savings calculator assuming about 85 percent on another, and a third describing the loop as the AI working daily while you review exceptions. Searching for an AI bookkeeper in 2026 mostly surfaces an accounting firm with an AI story, at firm prices, because the recent arrivals in accounting are almost entirely firms rather than software, and one of them says it plainly on its own page, that accountants use AI agents, the AI does the manual work and the accountants review.
What reviewers raise
Technical glitches such as missing transactions and bank feeds that stop categorizing, customer service, and a confusing interface after a redesign are the recurring themes.
What owners say
A solo owner says his whole system is the bank statements plus one spreadsheet he puts off opening, which holds together until tax season and then turns into a scramble, and he wants to know whether anybody has actually put an AI product to work on it. Another owner says the person keeping his books is slow, permanently behind and frequently wrong, and wants to know whether an AI product could take it on instead.
Questions to ask in the demo
- Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
- Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
- Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
