Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • The AI reads each bill and codes it to the right account with nobody keying it in. Paying still waits for your approval in nearly every product, and vendors design it that way on purpose.
  • Only one product we found pays without being asked, and only vendors who take a card.
  • Make sure it works alongside the accounting software you already pay for, so bills and payments land in your books.
  • In reviews, the complaints are about moving money, not about the AI: accounts frozen without explanation, payments late or missing, and support that is hard to reach. Ask how a stuck payment gets resolved and how fast.
  • Five products here start free, including several long-established names. The highest published entry price is $299 a month.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

These count because the software reads the bill and codes it to the right account with nobody keying it in. Releasing the money is the one step a person keeps, and most vendors design it that way on purpose. Of the 14 we checked in the first round, 13 move the money themselves rather than passing the job to your bank. What they will not do is move it unasked. In 13 of the 14 we checked, a person approves the payment and then the software pays, and that order is deliberate. One vendor sells the whole sequence as drag, drop, approve, pay. Another says its AI will prepare a payment for a person to release. A third charges extra for the approval step itself, and two more sell approvals as a control you would want rather than a limit to be removed. Only one publishes an agent that pays without being asked, and only for vendors who take a card.

Watch for

The review pages here are among the most negative we saw, and the complaints are about money movement rather than about the AI. The recurring themes are accounts frozen or suspended without explanation, payments that arrive late or not at all, and support that is hard to reach. Opinion is split rather than all one way. The newest arrival publishes $299 a month; several long-established products start free.

What owners say

A cafe owner with a long list of suppliers says paying them all by hand has got past what he can keep up with, while the accounts-payable names everybody recommends are built for a bigger operation than his. He wants something cheap and simple that will sit alongside the accounting product he already pays for. The owner of a services company says the back office has got away from him: paying clients out, paying freelancers and keeping track of what the business spends now take up half his week, and he wants to know why the supplier payments that leave on the same date every month still cannot be set to look after themselves.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
