Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • Most of these run the screening interview or move candidates forward on their own, and several deliberately stop at a ranked shortlist. Decide how far you want it to go without you.
  • These are priced for steady hiring volume. A business hiring two people a year is not who they are built for, and many recent arrivals sell to staffing agencies.
  • Setup, connections to your other systems and usage over the plan’s allowance can add 30 to 100 percent to the listed price.
  • No vendor publishes how many candidates quit an AI interview partway. Ask for that number.
  • In reviews, price increases and features moving to paid add-ons are the loudest complaints.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

The products act, and most can be bought with a sign-up form (16 of 25). Of the 16 we checked in the first round, 11 do the step they own with nobody in the loop: one auto-disqualifies, one can be set to auto-email, and six run the screening interview with no person present. Four more deliberately stop at a ranked shortlist, and two of them publish that as a promise rather than a limitation, with lines to the effect that the product is autonomous through the shortlist but never through the decision, and that nothing is auto-rejected. One says on autopilot in its headline and then says in its own FAQ that you approve the candidates before it reaches out.

Watch for

No vendor publishes a measured rate of candidates quitting an AI screening interview. The one that mentions it claims there is no drop-off without showing a measurement. 10 of the 25 publish no price. Trade sources put 2026 AI recruiting software at $99 to $699 a month, with setup, connecting it to your other systems, training and the charges for going past your included usage routinely adding 30 to 100 percent on top. A business hiring two people a year is not the buyer these products are priced for, and the recent arrivals mostly sell to staffing agencies rather than to the business doing the hiring.

What reviewers raise

Price increases, and features that used to be included moving behind a paid add-on, are the loudest theme. Some reviewers describe suddenly losing access to their account.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
