AI Inventory Reordering: no product passes yet
No product passes both tests today. Every one we checked either builds a suggested purchase order that a person approves, or places the order when stock crosses a level you set, which is a fixed rule. If you want this job done, expect to click approve, and ask the vendor which part an AI decides.
What we found
How real (from our first round of research)
Many products here are called agents but do not place the order. A large part of this market is a forecasting tool sold under the word agent, and a second large part raises a draft purchase order that a buyer approves with one click, which is a draft a person must send. Of the 10 we checked in the first round, four publish a sentence where the order is actually raised or placed without an approval step, and two others say in their own words that what they generate is a suggestion or a proposal to confirm. Expect to click approve. Several more dropped out when we asked whether an AI was doing the work, because the purchase order goes out the moment stock crosses a reorder level you set yourself, which is a rule and not a decision. In the final check, the last products left here came off too: on their own pages they build a suggested order or an order plan for a person to approve, or they reorder at a level you set, with no statement that an AI makes the call.
Watch for
The entry price gap is large, from free to install at one end to $900 a month at the other. One replenishment product we checked has since been discontinued, so check a product is still sold before you set it up.
Worth knowing
The newest companies building purchasing agents either wait for a person to approve the order and sell through a sales call, or sell to wholesalers and larger companies. Trade content puts small-business budgets for this at $300 to $800 a month per location.
What owners say
An owner was pitched a $2,000 a month chatbot when what he needed was 5,000 messy supplier part numbers entered correctly, described in Where products stop short.
If a vendor says its product does this
- Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
- Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
- Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
