Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • These carry out a task you describe in plain words, on the web or in your accounts. Most ask before anything consequential, such as buying, publishing or sharing personal data, so expect to be asked.
  • The agent is often on a higher plan than the headline price, and one caps agent use at 40 messages a month on its $20 plan.
  • Credit-based plans have daily caps and unused credits that do not roll over. Check how much real work a month of credits buys.
  • In reviews, credits running out faster than expected is the recurring complaint.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

The acting is real and easy to check, because the big vendors publish the sentence themselves: one writes that this is the first time users can ask its product to take actions on the web, and another that its agent will plan the job, find its way around, click and carry the whole thing through across several sites. All 12 we checked in the first round carry a vendor sentence showing the thing acts, but only a handful act with nobody watching: one requires explicit user confirmation before consequential actions and another asks before high-risk actions such as publishing, purchasing or sharing personal data, so the number you could start and then leave alone is closer to 4 than 12.

Watch for

The claim is usually true, and the plan you have to be on to get it is the catch. One vendor’s agent sits on a $19.99 plan, another’s is billed in $200 credit packs on top of an $18.00 per user seat, and a third caps agent mode at 40 messages a month on its $20 plan against 400 on the tier above. Newer products are billed in credits, with a daily cap and unused monthly credits that do not roll over, so credits you paid for and did not use are lost at the end of the month. The vendors publish their own failure rates, covered in Trust and control.

What reviewers raise

Billing, credits and support dominate rather than what the agent can do. Credits running out faster than expected is the recurring complaint about the product itself.

What builders say

What holds these agents in real use is plain code that checks each step before anything that cannot be undone happens, described in Trust and control.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
