Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • These are sold as a named worker, but most do a job other parts of this map already cover, such as sales outreach or answering calls. Compare against those products too.
  • You set it up like software, not like a hire. The vendor that sells a product literally called AI Employee says it needs setup and ongoing human oversight.
  • 5 of the 17 publish no price and 6 are sold only through a sales call, so you often cannot compare the cost against a salary before a call.
  • Some pause or ask before important actions, such as a daily safety cap that stops the agent partway through the day. Ask what limits it has.
  • In reviews, credits running out fast is the sharpest complaint, in one case within a day.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

Many products in this job do a job that other jobs on this map already cover, sold under a person’s name. Of the 9 we checked in the first round, 4 do cold sales outreach and 3 of those carry a person’s first name. One is a CRM add-on that is a voice agent and a chat agent sold as a person; and one is the same product that appears under AI Agent Builder. The acting is real in 8 of the 9 we checked, with published wording including booking meetings for your reps autonomously, sending outreach by email and social and booking meetings directly into your calendar, and planning and executing complex engineering tasks. What the marketing gets wrong is the idea that you are hiring somebody, and the vendor that literally sells a product called AI Employee says so in its own disclaimer, that the AI features are software functionality only and require setup, configuration and ongoing human oversight.

Watch for

You do not hire this the way you hire a person, because you have to set it up first. One vendor’s own reply to an unhappy buyer explains that the initial setup is a more involved period because the product needs information about the business. On the map, 5 of the 17 publish no price and 6 are sold only through a sales call, so you often cannot compare the cost against a salary before a call. Of the three newest products, all publish a price and all act, and one publishes a limit on what it does unasked: it asks you to approve any business-critical action first. Another documents a daily safety cap that pauses the agent for the rest of the day once reached, so it can stop partway through a working day.

What reviewers raise

The complaints are about credits rather than about what the product can do, and they are sharpest where the product is sold to the smallest buyers. One reviewer says the included credits would run out in a day.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
