What to know before you buy
- Most of these are building blocks. Only a couple are sold as a monthly plan with minutes included; several are made for developers, and without one you may need to hire someone to set it up.
- The per-minute rate on the page usually covers part of the cost. A working setup lands at roughly $0.13 to $0.30 a minute.
- Cheap tiers limit how many calls it takes at once, as few as 4, so it can drop calls at a busy hour. Ask the limit on your plan.
- At least one vendor keeps billing after the call passes to a person.
- In reviews, slow support and the agent answering slowly lead the complaints.
More from our research
How real (from our first round of research)
These are hard to fake, because they bill by the minute. All 10 we checked in the first round act and none of them just writes you a draft. The question is who can actually use one. Only two are sold the way you buy anything else, as a monthly plan with minutes included. Three sit in the middle, where you can build the agent without writing code but the price is per minute and the assembly is still yours. Five are sold to software developers, who connect to them in code rather than through a setup screen. An owner who buys from that last group without help will likely need to hire someone to set it up.
Watch for
The per-minute rate on the page usually covers only part of the cost; a setup that actually works lands at roughly $0.13 to $0.30 a minute, as explained in What it costs. At least one vendor keeps billing by the minute after the agent has already passed the caller to a person, which you would not predict from the headline rate. There is also a limit on how many calls the agent can take at once, so the cheapest tier starts dropping calls at a busy hour: 4 at the same time at one vendor, 10 at two others.
What reviewers raise
Slow support and the agent taking too long to answer lead the complaints, more than billing. Ratings vary widely from one product to another.
What builders say
One all-in-one voice model runs at about $0.18 a minute. Doing the same work with three cheaper pieces bolted together, one that turns speech into text, one that works out the reply and one that reads it back aloud, costs about $0.0125 a minute, roughly fourteen times less. A builder who made that switch says that once you are handling real call volume, the difference is large enough to decide whether the business makes money.
Questions to ask in the demo
- Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
- Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
- Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
