Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • Most inbox products sort, label and file mail on their own but only draft replies. If you want replies sent, ask for the sentence on the vendor’s page that says it sends.
  • Aggressive filing that hides mail you wanted is the complaint specific to this job. Check what it filed away in the first weeks.
  • The cheapest plan can cover one email account and one feature. Price the plan that covers the accounts you actually use.
  • In reviews, cancellation and billing are the most repeated themes, followed by drafts that need heavy editing.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

Most inbox products draft and then stop, and the vendors say so plainly. One vendor’s own pricing FAQ states it cannot send emails on your behalf and only drafts them, and another’s own blog says auto-send is rare even where it is technically supported. Of the 14 we checked in the first round, 4 act all the way to a sent reply with no person in the loop, and the other 10 are counted because they act on the mailbox itself, sorting, labeling, archiving and routing without being asked each time. Most of what you can buy here sorts your mail; few products send the reply.

Watch for

Aggressive auto-filing that hides mail you wanted is the complaint specific to this job. What low-star reviews keep saying is mail disappearing from the inbox and being hard to find again. Cancellation and billing is the most repeated theme across every review page we checked for this job, and draft quality needing heavy correction before sending is named in the low-star reviews. Some reviewers also describe the first setup as tedious. Tier gaps matter: one product’s cheapest published plan covers one email account and one feature, so the real entry for a working setup is higher than the headline figure.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
