What to know before you buy
- These read the invoice, form or contract and put the details into your other system with nobody retyping, or build the finished document from your data.
- Several price by credits or pages, so the monthly figure is a floor. Work it out at the number of documents you actually process.
- AI can misread numbers across documents with full confidence. Ask how it flags uncertain fields and who reviews the exceptions.
- There are almost no public reviews for the extraction tools, so ask for a customer with documents like yours.
More from our research
How real (from our first round of research)
The products really do act, because the whole point of document extraction is that nobody retypes the invoice. All 12 we checked in the first round either read a document and post the fields into another system on their own, or build a finished document from data with no keystrokes, and one states it plainly, that your team only reviews the exceptions. The line was drawn at proposal editors and contract review: a tool whose AI writes paragraphs into an editor that a person then sends is suggesting, and two well-known names are out for that, while one is in because its own page says the AI marks up the contract and negotiates the changes itself.
Watch for
Credit-based pricing hides the real bill, with four products pricing in credits or pages rather than seats, so the monthly figure is a floor and not a forecast. Public review trails for the extraction tools are thin to the point of absence: one has a single review on an unclaimed profile, and no other product in this job had a review page we could open, so you cannot check this part of the market by reading reviews. Where reviews exist, refusal to refund unused months is the most repeated subject, and one reviewer describes a new per-document charge for something that used to be included.
What one test showed
It gave a widely used AI model four deals and asked which had the highest asking price. The model picked the wrong one, and picked wrong again after the instructions were made clearer, with no sign of doubt either time. Comparing numbers across documents is exactly what these products are bought for.
Questions to ask in the demo
- Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
- Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
- Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
