Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • Most browser agents are sold to software developers. Only a few are something an owner can install and use the same day, at about $17 to $20 a month.
  • The vendors themselves hedge: one recommends avoiding financial, legal and medical sites. Do not leave one working unwatched on an account that matters.
  • Credits or browsing hours come on top of the subscription and can run out fast, so the monthly price is a floor.
  • Few of these have review pages, so you cannot judge them by reading reviews. Try it on a low-stakes task first.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

Of the 10 we checked in the first round, 6 are priced and written up for software developers rather than for an owner: four sell credits, hours of browsing time and access codes meant for programmers, and two sell a builder you have to set up yourself. Only 4 are something a non-technical owner could install and use this afternoon, at $17, $19.99 and $19.90 a month plus one that publishes no price at all. Even those carry the vendors’ own hedges: one page is titled a trial run and recommends avoiding financial, legal and medical sites, and another says you can edit, approve or step in at any moment. No vendor says on its own page that you should leave it working on your supplier account unwatched.

Watch for

Credits disappearing on top of the subscription, without your noticing, is a named theme in reviews, which describe a separate pot of credits that empties fast. The complaint applies across this job, because every builder here charges in credits or in hours of browsing time, so the monthly figure is a floor. One vendor marks its agent US only and English only, so an owner outside the US cannot buy that capability at all today.

Worth knowing

When the AI underneath gets a little worse, a browser agent clicks the wrong button, where another product would only write a slightly worse paragraph. Five of the standalone browser agents had no review page we could open, so for this job you cannot check the market by reading reviews at all.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
