Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • The ad platforms’ own automated campaigns, from Google, Meta and Microsoft, set bids, placements and creative themselves and cost nothing beyond your ad spend. Try those before paying for a separate tool.
  • Most independent ad tools you will be shown only recommend changes for you to make. Of the 8 an owner is most likely to see, 7 work that way and are not listed here. Ask whether it changes the account itself.
  • Set a hard budget cap and check where the money went every week. An agent can spend across more searches than you can check by hand, and one setting sent 72 percent of a week’s spend to searches unrelated to the product.
  • Price the plan you actually need, not the entry plan. One vendor lists $66 a month billed yearly and recommends its $335 plan.
  • In reviews, the serious complaints are spending past the budget cap, ads shown outside the chosen area and billing after cancellation. Ask how the cap is enforced and how you cancel.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

The job splits cleanly in two and only one half is new. The ad platforms’ own automated campaign products do set bids, placements and creative themselves, cost nothing beyond the media, and you can switch them on alone. The independent tools are thinner than their marketing suggests: of eleven third-party products opened, five turned out to recommend rather than act and were left out. All 15 we checked in the first round carry a vendor sentence showing the product changes the account rather than proposing a change, though in one of them what makes the change is a set of if-this-then-that rules, and the AI’s job is to write the rule for a person to check.

Watch for

Of the 8 independent ad tools an owner is most likely to be shown, 7 only recommend changes for a person to make, and are not listed here. The gap between the advertised entry and the plan you actually need runs to about five times, one vendor publishing $66 a month billed yearly and naming its recommended plan at $335.

What reviewers raise

Complexity, cost and support come up most, along with AI recommendations reviewers found unreliable and losing manual control. The most serious complaints describe spending past the budget cap, ads shown outside the chosen area, and billing after cancellation. Two products here have no reviews at all.

Worth knowing

An ad setting that widened the searches an ad could appear on sent 72 percent of one week’s spend to searches unrelated to the product, described in Trust and control.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
