Is something missing or wrong?

What to know before you buy

  • Most of these really do answer, talk with the caller and book the job or take the message on their own, with no one in the loop.
  • The big phone systems and field service software now include one. Check what your current phone or job software already offers before buying a separate product.
  • The monthly call or minute limit sets what you actually pay. Entry plans are sized for low volumes, so price it at your real number of calls.
  • Ask how it handles spam calls. Some screen them out; others count them against your limit.
  • In reviews, billing and refund problems, slow support and uneven call quality come up most. Ask about the contract length and cancellation before you sign.
More from our research

How real (from our first round of research)

Most of the 15 we checked act with no person in the loop. They answer, converse, and book or take the message rather than producing a draft. A good sign that these products are real is that the long-established phone systems and field software have all shipped one, so you meet an AI answering tier beside the standalone products. Among newly launched companies, all eight new receptionist products we checked in the first round answer the phone and book unattended, and all eight publish a price or a sign-up you complete yourself.

Watch for

The minute and call caps decide what you actually pay, and a shop taking 300 calls a month is not on the entry plan. Three vendors name spam calls as a separate line on the page, as something their product screens out or charges for.

What reviewers raise

Refund and billing problems, slow support, disputed claims and uneven AI performance come up most. One reviewer describes a six-month contract with no refund. Several products have few or no public reviews, including one with a large published customer count.

What owners say

Two forum questions from the past six months ask owners of small businesses whether they have ever put one on their phones, and whether paying for cover through the night is worth it on a small team. A trades thread puts it more bluntly and asks whether owners actually keep these on the line, or whether older customers find them an annoyance.

Questions to ask in the demo

  1. Does an AI do this, or does a rule? If the answer is “when X happens it sends Y”, you are buying automation, and it should not cost AI prices.
  2. Does it send, or does it draft? Ask for the sentence on their page that says it acts on its own.
  3. Does it do it on its own on this plan, or on the one above? The setting that lets it act without you is often a tier up from the entry price.
